🌍 Dutch ZonMw research programme launched

One of the topics discussed in News from the Netherlands in this issue is the approval of a 10 year Biomedical Research Program with a subsidy of € 28,5 million.

Just before releasing this issue, Dutch ZonMW – who executes the programme and compiled its text – published the first call.

Below are the main elements of it, a very important one being the obligation to cooperate with foreign research consortiums. The total budget is not less than € 10 million.

On December 16, 2021 the first call of the ZonMw research programme was opened.

The text reads:

The call is intended for research consortia, who can apply for funding to support their collaboration and conduct research on ME/CFS. The deadline is March 1, 2022.

Purpose of the call

The aim of this call for proposals is to establish research consortia that conduct long-term research into the multisystem disease ME/CFS. Within these consortia, transdisciplinary research is conducted into the cause, diagnosis and/or treatment of ME/CFS in various sub-studies.

Within this call for proposals, funding can be requested for both the establishment of a consortium and the implementation of the sub-studies that the consortium will carry out in the next five years. The data and body materials collected in the studies will be combined in a Dutch ME/CFS patient registry and biobank.

What can be applied for?

In this call for proposals two types of applications can be made:

  • Applications for consortia (duration of (at least) 8 years).

In this call a ‘consortium’ is understood to be a sustainable partnership of different institutions and organisations. The following forms of cooperation must be represented:

Collaboration between research disciplines that may be involved in ME/CFS

 International co-operation

Co-operation between professional groups

Co-operation with patients

  • Applications for sub-investigations

The subinvestigations will be carried out in the successful consortia and will follow the lines of research described as promising in ZonMw’s ME/CFS research agenda. Specifically, this involves:

Fundamental research.

Epidemiological research.

Clinical research

Budget

The total available grant budget in this funding round is € 10,000,000. The aim is to fund 2 to 3 consortia including subprojects. A target amount of €500,000 per sub-study with a duration of 4 years applies to sub-study applications.

Deadline

Grant application can be submitted until March 1, 2022, 2 pm CET
